PROGRAM
DAY 1, SAN PEDRO SULA - YOJOA LAKE
After arrival in San Pedro Sula, we start our journey with a scenic drive to Lake Yojoa. The area surrounding Honduras’ largest inland lake is home to a variety of ecosystems and serves as a habitat or temporary stop for over 300 species of migratory birds. Depending the size of your group we will stay 3 nights at the Visitor Center of Azul Meambar National Park or at the Lunda del Puente Nature Reserve. If you arrive early, we surely will stop at the lake to watch out for the Violet Sabrewing, among many other species.
DAY 2, BIRDING THE YOJOA LAKE - FULL DAY BIRDING & EXPLORING
Today we will spent our day birding in the area of the Yojoa lake. The Azul Meambar National Park right next the lake is ranging from 415 to 2,080 metres where you will encounter coffee plantations, pine forests, misty cloud forests, and rare dwarf forests, forming a unique ecosystem where twisted oaks are covered in moss and lichen. Already en route to the entrance you may spot Crested Caracaras, Red-lored Parrots, Painted Buntings, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Plumbeous Kites and a Masked Tityra among many others. Watch out also for White-collared Swifts, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Blue-black Grosbeak, Crimson-rumped Tanagers, Keel-billed Motmot, Highland Guan and Collared Trogon. Another highlight near the Cajon dam is the Honduran Emerald.
DAY 3, BIRDING THE YOJOA LAKE - FULL DAY BIRDING & EXPLORING
Early morning we start another adventurous birding day. We will explore the Luna del Puente Nature Reserve. The reserve includes cocoa plantations, pine forests and agricultural land that provide a range of habitats for different bird species. With 280 recorded bird species, including the Tody Motmot, the Green Jay and the striped owl, the reserve offers diverse birdlife. It is also known for its agroforestry practices that help protect biodiversity. In addition to the birds mentioned above, you can also look out for species such as the brown violet-ear, grey-headed kite, blue-throated golden tale, spot-breasted kinglet. The location at 700 metres above sea level creates a pleasant climate that is ideal for birdwatching.
DAY 4, YOJOA LAKE - PICO BONITO NATIONAL PARK
Before breakfast we will have a last glimpse of birds surrounding our place before we will make our way towards the Caribbean coast in the direction of La Ceiba. Time permitting, we will stop in Tela to visit the largest botanical garden in Mesoamerica, the Jardín Botánico Lancetilla. Founded by the Tela Railroad Company, this botanical garden is a remnant of the country’s "banana republic" era. Spread over an extensive area, it features tropical plants from around the world. Highlights include the orchid collection, the bamboo forest, and the more than 300 species of birds, including parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, and kingfishers. Afterwards we continue to the famous Lodge at Pico Bonito National Park where we will experience a first impression what the National Park has to offer. Accommodations are in charming wooden bungalows, each featuring its own private veranda. You will spend four nights at this luxurious lodge, which offers both immersive birding and nature experiences and ample opportunities for relaxation.
DAY 5, PICO BONITO NATIONAL PARK
This Lodge is a premier birding destination located on the edge of Pico Bonito National Park in northern Honduras. Nestled within over 400 acres of tropical rainforest and surrounded by protected areas, the lodge offers an extraordinary diversity of birdlife and other wildlife. We will enjoy this home to a wide range of fauna, including iconic Neotropical species like the Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Great Curassow, Central American agouti, and elusive big cats such as the ocelot and, more rarely, the jaguar. The surrounding rainforest, rivers, and cloud forest create a rich mosaic of habitats that support over 420 bird species recorded in the region. Birding at Pico Bonito is exceptional, with opportunities to spot colorful and rare species in comfort and style. The lodge features: Well-maintained forest trails that wind through diverse ecosystems, beautifully landscaped gardens with native flowering plants that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Beside extensively walking tours, we will observe species at eye level on the three canopy observation towers, including the renowned Toucan Tower.
DAY 6, CUERO Y SALADO WILDLIFE REFUGEE
Early morning transfer to La Unión, where we will swap our vehicle for a "Burra" (a hand-powered rail trolley). This will take us to the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge visitor centre, from where we will board a boat to explore the labyrinthine mangrove channels of the Salado River, leading to a lagoon on the Caribbean coast. During the boat tour, we will observe the park’s rich flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for mantled Howler Monkeys, Kingfishers, Agami Heron, collared Plover, Lesser Anteater, Central American Coati, Toucans, colourful hummingbirds, and, with a bit of luck, salt water crocodiles and manatees.
DAY 7, PICO BONITO NATIONAL PARK
Due to its dramatic elevation changes, the park boasts exceptional ecological diversity. As altitude increases, the vegetation gradually shifts from tropical rainforest to cloud forest. The park’s namesake peak, Pico Bonito, rises to an impressive 2,436 meters (7,992 feet), making it the third highest mountain in the country. Today we will spent our last day again on the the park’s trails and in the afternoon you can take advantage of the lodge’s optional amenities such as sauna, spa, massages or the pool.
DAY 8, PICO BONITO NATIONAL PARK - SAN PEDRO SULA
It's time to say goodbye. We will ensure you arrive on time at the San Pedro Sula Airport for your flight home, or we can drop you off at the airport or ferry terminal in La Ceiba for your extended beach vacation on one of the Bay Islands; Roatán, Utila, Guanaja or the Cayos Cochinos.
