PROGRAM OF THE MAINLAND TOUR «COMBI EL SALVADOR & HONDURAS»

DAY 1, SAN SALVADOR

Arrival in San Salvador and transfer to your city hotel.

DAY 2, SAN SALVADOR - JOYA DE CERÉN - SUCHITOTO

We start our trip with a city tour in San Salvador. Among other important monuments we also visit the National Palace and the National Museum of Anthropology. This museum houses an impressive collection of pre Colombian antiquities from the Pre classic era (1500 BC-250 AD). Later we leave the capital towards Joya de Ceren. This archaeological site, which is also called the Salvadorian's Pompei was inscribed in the UNESCO World heritage list in 1993 because of the completeness of the evidence that it provides of everyday life in a Mesoamerican farming community of the 6th century. The pre Hispanic farming community was buried under a volcanic eruption in AD 590. The ash preserved the personal belongings of the inhabitants until today. Afterwards we continue to Suchitoto where we will stay one night.

DAY 3, SUCHITOTO

In the morning, we visit the rural community of La Cinquera. This post‑war community is an inspiring example of how collective effort can transform people’s lives. During the civil conflict of the 1980s, La Cinquera was an important stronghold of the FMLN, and today the community has turned its history into a tourism project that aims both to share this key chapter of El Salvador’s past and to protect the surrounding forest from illegal logging. During the visit, we explore the small Civil War Museum and the central park, where local guides explain how the community rebuilt itself and organized to preserve its natural environment. After the tour, we return to Suchitoto, where you’ll have time to stroll along its cobblestone streets and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this charming town. Suchitoto offers the feeling of stepping back in time, with well‑preserved colonial architecture, colorful art galleries, and local crafts. One of its main highlights is the beautiful Santa Lucía Church, built in 1853 and proudly standing on the main square.

!Optional!: In the afternoon  take a boat tour on Suchitlán Lake, the largest artificial lake in  the country. Its natural scenic beauty makes it an ideal destination to enjoy an artisan boat ride with one of the local boaters. During the boat ride you will be able to visit the different islands that surround the lake, home of migratory birds and native animals.

DAY 4, SUCHITOTO - RUTA DE LAS FLORES - ATACO

Today we continue our journey along the Ruta de las Flores, passing through the picturesque towns of Nahuizalco, Juayúa, and finally Ataco, where colonial architecture, colorful handicraft markets, and a unique atmosphere await us. Along the way, we visit the El Carmen Mill, founded in 1930 by Don Agustín Alfaro Morán, which has preserved its traditional method of processing high‑quality coffee. This is the perfect place to learn about coffee culture, enjoy the pleasant climate, and take in the beautiful panoramic views. We tour the coffee mill with a local guide who explains the coffee‑making process. We learn how coffee is processed—from the cherries to the green beans ready for export. At the end of the tour, we enjoy a cup of gourmet Ataco coffee at the traditional mill. Ataco, where we will spend the night, is one of the main towns along the route and is especially known for its bright and colorful street art that decorates most of the city’s buildings.

DAY 5, ATACO - TAZUMAL - COPÁN RUINAS (HONDURAS)

After an early breakfast, we begin the day with a visit to the Maya ruins of Tazumal, considered the most important and best‑preserved archaeological site in El Salvador. The highlight of the visit is an impressive life‑size stone carving of the Nahua god. After exploring the site, we continue toward the border to cross into Honduras and then travel onward to Copán Ruinas. Depending on the arrival time, you may take a stroll through the town’s charming streets before settling into the hotel.

DAY 6, COPÁN RUINAS

Today is all about the Maya civilization. The ruins of Copán are considered some of the most outstanding structures built by the Maya. They are set in a beautiful valley surrounded by extensive coffee and vegetable plantations. During the visit, you will explore the Acropolis, the impressive ball court, the famous Hieroglyphic Stairway, and the Central Plaza with its artistic stelae. The volcanic andesite stone found in Copán allowed ancient stonemasons to carve extremely precise glyphs. Thanks to this exceptional preservation, researchers have been able to reconstruct 400 years of Maya history here more accurately than at any other site.Afterwards there will be time for sightseeing and dining in the picturesque town of Copán.

DAY 7, COPÁN RUINAS - CERRO AZUL MEAMBAR NATIONAL PARK

Our trip continues on a panoramic tour towards Lake Yojoa. The region around Lake Yojoa is rich in different habitats for various animals. It is the home or temporary residence of more than 300 species of migratory birds. We continue to the most beautiful waterfall in Honduras: Pulhapanzak, which served as inspiration and basis for Walt Disney's world famous film "The Jungle Book" during his trip through Honduras in 1965. With a drop of approximately 140 feet/43 meters It is only 30 feet/9 meters lower than Niagara Falls. Based on several artifacts surrounding the waterfall, it is believed that this was an important ceremonial center for the ancient Mayans. Enjoy the unique beauty that the Rio Lindo has carved into a tropical canyon. Then we continue to the Lodge in the Cerro Azul Meambar National Park.

DAY 8, CERRO AZUL MEAMBAR NATIONAL PARK
